This Privacy Policy describes how Unplastic Labs LLC ("Unplastic Labs," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, stores, and protects the personal information of members and visitors who access our website at unplasticlabs.com and our member portal (collectively, the "Platform").
By using the Platform or becoming a member, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy. This Policy should be read alongside our Terms and Conditions, available at unplasticlabs.com/terms.
1. Information We Collect
We collect the following categories of personal information from members during onboarding and through your use of the Platform:
1.1 Information You Provide Directly
First and last name
Email address
Mobile phone number
Self-reported health interests and lifestyle information (optional, provided during onboarding)
Research questions you would like Unplastic Labs to investigate (optional, provided during onboarding)
Study voting selections and community study suggestions submitted through the Platform
1.2 Payment Information
Payment processing is handled by a third-party payment processor. Unplastic Labs does not collect, store, or have access to your full credit card number or banking details. Your payment data is governed solely by the privacy policy of our payment processor.
1.3 Automatically Collected Information
When you visit our website or member portal, we and our service providers may automatically collect certain technical information, including IP address, browser type, device type, referring URLs, and pages visited. This information is used for operational, security, and analytical purposes.
We may use analytics tools and services to understand how visitors interact with our Platform, including but not limited to page visits, traffic sources, session duration, and device types. Such tools may collect information in aggregate and anonymized form. Any analytics tools we use are selected and configured to minimize unnecessary data collection.
2. How We Use Your Information
Unplastic Labs uses the information we collect solely for the following purposes:
To create and manage your membership account
To process seasonal membership payments
To deliver research findings (The Signal) and membership communications to your email address
To send SMS notifications when new research findings are published or when material membership updates occur
To record and consider your study votes and community research suggestions in planning future research seasons
To analyze Platform usage in order to improve our services and member experience
To respond to support requests and membership inquiries
To comply with applicable legal obligations
We do not use your personal information to make automated decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you. We do not use your self-reported health information for any purpose other than understanding our community's collective research interests.
3. SMS Communications
By providing your mobile phone number during onboarding, you expressly consent to receive SMS text messages from Unplastic Labs. SMS communications are strictly limited to:
Notification that a new season's research findings (The Signal) are available
Material membership updates that require your attention
We do not send promotional, marketing, or frequent SMS messages. Message and data rates may apply depending on your mobile carrier.
You may opt out of SMS communications at any time by replying STOP to any message we send, or by contacting us at support@unplasticlabs.com. Opting out of SMS does not affect your membership status or access to research content.
4. How We Share Your Information
4.1 No Sale of Personal Data
Unplastic Labs does not sell, rent, lease, or trade your personal information to any third party under any circumstances. Your data is not a product. It never will be.
4.2 Third-Party Service Providers
We work with a limited number of trusted third-party service providers who assist us in operating the Platform. These providers may include vendors offering services in the following categories:
Payment processing
Database infrastructure and member authentication
Data storage and community submission management
Website and portal hosting
Transactional email delivery
SMS notifications
Website analytics and advertising measurement
All third-party service providers are engaged under confidentiality obligations and are permitted to access your personal information only to the extent necessary to perform services on our behalf. Except as described in Section 4.5 (Advertising Measurement), we do not authorize our service providers to use your personal information for their own independent purposes unrelated to the services they perform for us.
We do not share your self-reported health information or research interests with any third party beyond what is strictly necessary for the operational purposes described in this Policy.
4.3 Legal Requirements
We may disclose your personal information if required to do so by law, court order, or governmental authority, or if we believe in good faith that such disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of Unplastic Labs, our members, or the public.
4.4 International Data Transfers
Unplastic Labs operates in the United States. If you are accessing the Platform from outside the United States, please be aware that your personal information will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States. Additionally, some of our third-party service providers may operate on servers located outside your country of residence. By using the Platform or becoming a member, you consent to the transfer of your personal information to the United States and other countries, which may have data protection laws that differ from those in your country. Where such transfers occur, we take reasonable steps to ensure your personal information receives an appropriate level of protection consistent with this Privacy Policy.
4.5 Advertising Measurement.
To measure the effectiveness of our advertising, we share limited event information with Meta Platforms, Inc., both through the Meta Pixel on our website and directly from our servers (via Meta's Conversions API) when a membership purchase is completed. The information shared may include a hashed (irreversibly encrypted) version of your email address and name, together with details of the purchase such as the membership tier and amount. This data is used to attribute memberships to advertising and to improve ad performance. We share only what is necessary for this purpose and never share your self-reported health information or research interests with Meta.
5. Data Retention
We retain your personal information for as long as your membership is active and for a reasonable period afterward to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. You may request deletion of your account and personal data at any time by contacting us at legal@unplasticlabs.com. When we receive a deletion request, we will: (a) acknowledge receipt of your request within five (5) business days; (b) verify your identity using information associated with your account; and (c) complete deletion of your personal data within five (5) business days of successful identity verification. We will retain only the information we are required to keep under applicable law, for example, transaction records required for tax reporting or records subject to a legal hold. Where any such information is retained, we will tell you what categories of information we are keeping and the legal basis for keeping it. No method of transmission or electronic storage is completely secure. While we take reasonable steps to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Data Security
Unplastic Labs takes reasonable and appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information against unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction. Our Platform utilizes industry-standard encryption and is hosted on secure, reputable infrastructure.
No method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure. While we strive to protect your personal information, we cannot guarantee absolute security. In the event of a data breach that materially affects your personal information, we will notify affected members promptly in accordance with applicable law.
7. Cookies and Tracking Technologies
Our website uses cookies and similar technologies for three purposes: essential cookies required for the Platform to function; analytics cookies that help us understand how the Platform is used; and advertising cookies that help us measure and improve the performance of our advertising. Advertising cookies are placed only after you consent through our cookie banner.
Specifically, we use the Meta Pixel, a service provided by Meta Platforms, Inc. When active, the Meta Pixel sets cookies (including fbp and, where you arrived via a Meta advertisement, fbc) and allows us to measure conversions, understand which ads led to memberships, and build audiences for our advertising. The Meta Pixel does not place these cookies unless you accept non-essential cookies. You can decline at any time through the cookie banner, change your preferences via the Cookie Preferences control on our site, or manage cookies through your browser settings.
8. Age Restriction
The Unplastic Labs Platform is intended for use by individuals who are at least eighteen (18) years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under the age of 18. If we become aware that a person under 18 has provided us with personal information, we will delete that information promptly. 9. California Residents — Your Privacy Rights
If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA), grants you specific rights regarding your personal information.
Right to Know. You may request that we disclose the categories and specific pieces of personal information we have collected about you, the categories of sources from which it was collected, the purposes for which we collect it, and the categories of third-party service providers with whom we share it.
Right to Delete. You may request that we delete personal information we have collected from you, subject to certain exceptions permitted by law.
Right to Correct. You may request that we correct inaccurate personal information we hold about you.
Right to Opt Out of Sale or Sharing. Unplastic Labs does not sell your personal information for monetary value. However, our use of advertising technologies such as the Meta Pixel and Meta's Conversions API may constitute "sharing" of personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising as defined under the CCPA/CPRA. You have the right to opt out of this sharing. To opt out, decline non-essential cookies through the cookie banner on our website, use the "Cookie Preferences" control available on our site, or email us at legal@unplasticlabs.com. We also honor opt-out preference signals, including the Global Privacy Control (GPC), where technically feasible.
Right to Non-Discrimination. We will not discriminate against you for exercising any of your rights under California law. Exercising these rights will not affect your membership status, the price you pay, or the level of service you receive.
How to Make a Request. Submit any of the above requests to legal@unplasticlabs.com. We will acknowledge your request within ten (10) business days of receipt and respond substantively within forty-five (45) days, as required by the CCPA. Where reasonably necessary, we may extend this period by an additional forty-five (45) days; if we do, we will notify you of the extension and the reason for it.
For requests to delete, the timeline for completing deletion after identity verification is described in Section 5. Verification. Before fulfilling your request, we will verify your identity using information associated with your account, such as your
registered email address. If we cannot verify your identity to a reasonable degree of certainty, we may decline the request and will explain why.
Authorized Agents. You may designate an authorized agent to make a request on your behalf. We may require the agent to provide proof of authorization and may require you to verify your identity directly.
10. Updates to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, legal requirements, or other factors. When we make material changes, we will notify members via email at least fourteen (14) days before the changes take effect. The updated Policy will always be available at unplasticlabs.com/privacy.
Your continued use of the Platform following notice of any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy. We encourage you to review this Policy periodically to stay informed about how we protect your information.
